Pavan ‘Pav’ Patel.

Pavan’s passion was always centred on the natural world, primarily wood and the art of the possible. Despite his creative calling, growing up in an Indian household where higher education was the only priority, his craft was put on hold until he had completed a master’s degree in engineering.

Combining an engineer’s precision with an artist’s eye, his works range from balanced to abstract, from wall pieces to freeform sculptures. It is always the individual piece of wood that is the catalyst for the final creation.

“I chose wood as my medium due to the uniqueness and individuality of every single piece of wood. Each slab of raw wood has a story to tell. The vision for each piece evolves as I get to know the material. The journey from raw material to a sculpture sometimes evolves so much from my original idea, it even surprises me. I love when that happens.”

Pavan’s formal training was in straight lines and hard edges. His work is a rebellion against that rigidity, replacing it with smooth curves and soft, natural forms that echo the world around us.
